"How that music used to make me smile" = I want to know how that music gave me pleasure in the past because now the things are different.
used to - in the habit of, in the usual way of doing things; if you did something regularly in the past = you used to do something: I used to sing when I was at University. I used to play tennis, but now I'm too busy.
"And may be they'd be happy for a while " = Probably they would be happy during a short period of time.
While - a short period of time: Just wait for a while and then I'll help you.
Faith - strong belief in something: He still ahs great talent, but he has lost faith in himself.
"And do you have faith in God above?" - Do you trust in God / Do you believe in God?
Save - make out of danger: "He has fallen into the water!" "Don't worry; I'll save him."
Mortal - that will die
Soul - the quality that makes the person human. Soul is thought by religion not to die
"And can music save your mortal soul " - Can music make your soul (that is not living for ever) out of death = Can music make you able to live forever.
Carnation - a sweet-smelling white, red or pink flower. Carnations are pinned to jackets or dresses when people visit ceremonies.
Truck - a thing on or in which people/things can be carried from one place to another.
Pickup truck - a light truck having an open body and low sides
Luck - the good or bad things that happen to a person by chance = fortune: The hotel was full, so we decided to try our luck elsewhere.
Luck - result of chance = good fortune: This charm will bring you luck.
"But I knew I was out of luck " = But I knew I was out of success = I hadn't good fortune.
Chevy - informal of "Chevrolet" = an American car. The Chevrolet is usually thought of as a large family car. Many American people have grown up with these cars, and connect (connect - связывать) them with their youth: I remember those evenings, kissing back seat of the old Chevy.
Levee - bank built to stop a river moving from a lower to a higher level or position.
Pie - informal: a hopeful plan or idea that has little chance of realization
"Bye bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry" = I say good-bye to my dream, because when I drove my car to the river (an idea of hopeful plans), the river was dry (it was impossible to realize my dreams).
"And I asked her for some happy news, but she smiled and turned away " = I hoped that she gave me some happy news, but she just shoed her pleasure and then she refused to help .
Store - a large building in which things are kept; a large shop.
Sacred - connected with God; serious, without humour or lightness
"I went down to the sacred store where I'd heard the music before" = I went down to the shop where I'd heard the music some time ago, and it was very important for me, so the shop became sacred for me because I felt my connection with God when I was inside that shop.
Holy Ghost = Holy Spirit
Spirit - something alive without physical form
Father = God
Son = Jesus, the founder of Christian religion
"They caught the last train for the coast" = They took the last train and went to the coast.
GRAMMAR
"If I had my chance, I could make those people dance" = Really I do not have any chance now so I can't make those people dance. When we talk about impossible situations in the present, we use Past in the if-sentence to say that this idea is not true: "If I had my chance ...".
Some other examples: If I didn't know you so well, I'd say you were lying (lie - лгать). (= but I know you well, so I can't say that you were lying).
If only he weren't so stupid (stupid - глупый), he would agree with us. (= but he is stupid, so he doesn't agree with us). You can also say "If only he wasn't so stupid".
"How that music used to make me smile" = How that music used to make the situation so fine that I was able to dance or it gave me pleasure to dance so I didn't stop dancing. You can say: "How that music used to get me to smile". "To make a person do something" and "to get a person to do something" can be used in these situations.
"If I had my chance, I could make those people dance" = If I had any possibility, I would be able to make the situation so pleasant that those people couldn't turn down dancing.
"Well I know that you're in love with him, 'cause I saw you dancing in the gym" = I saw you just (just - именно) at the moment you were dancing. "See a person doing something" = watch (наблюдать) somebody while he/she is in activity (activity - деятельность).
In the hall: I heard the bell ringing = Just right at the moment the bell was ringing I was in the hall, and so I was able (= I could) to get the bell.
While passing by the policeman saw them leaving the store = The policeman was passing by the shop. At that moment (= at the moment of his passing by) they (= the hooligans) were leaving the shop = It is reasonable to imagine that they were carrying some things and they wanted to hide those things, but the hooligans had ill luck (=bad fortune), and by chance the policeman saw the hooligans while they were in the process of doing the crime.
